Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ is another classic suspense movie. The movie has become such an icon in itself that a seemingly infinite number of parodies and spoofs branching from the script speaks volumes more than any critic’s diagnosis could ever do. But what is it about ‘Jaws’ that gives it the power to place a splinter in the mind of a majority of beach goers? The famous images of the movie are literally burned into the mind of the viewer by the ingenious camera usage by Spielberg. The image of the beautiful swimmer attacked by an unseen entity and the red cloud dispersing in the water that she previously occupied is one of the first scenes we are presented with as an audience, not to mention one of the most infamous, an upon its release kept many summer bathers away from the ocean and close to the pools. The scene of the buoy’s resurfacing is another iconic image. The buoy recently lodged into the skin of the enormous great white comes back to the water’s surface in the foreground of the shot with our heroes’ boat located in the background, allowing us to assume the worst for the characters on board. The movie is chopped full of these famous images and more which make the ‘Jaws’ the epic film it is.
